my city through my eyes. + birthday 2009. = these... →
Over the past year I’ve developed an interest in photography. Of course I am as amateur as they come, but that doesn’t stop me from breaking out my camera every time I see something worth capturing (with a view on the 32nd floor…these moments usually come as I look out my window at storms or sunsets.)
For my birthday I was given a Canon Rebel XS. I’m not quite positive...
girl gets smacked with a book...? →
Apparently it is up for debate whether this is a real or staged event. What do you think?
This is a video short of my best friend’s writing process… In this video, he is working on a screenplay in which Bigfoot is the main character. I think it’s for his horror writing class. I’ve had the privilege of reading it and it is, in fact, horrifying. He may get mad that I disclose this, but there is a rather large portion that addresses the sex drive of Sasquatch in...

lump sum. →
I realize that this isn’t a new concept. We have a system such as this intact here at Columbia in case of emergencies. Heck, I get CNN breaking news updates sent to my phone.
What I didn’t realize is how accessible this form of communication is, that even little old me could send out massive messages of my own “breaking news” to people I know. I can only begin to imagine...
Important Importance.
Tonight a fellow artist tried to convince me that artists aren’t important.
After getting past the wave of feelings of offensiveness that nearly drowned me, I calmly asked “how so?”.
He went on to explain to me that artists are not important because anyone and everyone is and/or can be one. Lawyers, doctors, teachers, etc. are the only ones in our society that hold any importance…according to...
Give it a rest.
I am overwhelmed with frustration as yet another person (let alone an “aspiring journalist”) bombards me with insults of the media. It is one thing to acknowledge a problem. It is another thing to bash an entire industry and have complete disregard for others who are trying to better it. Then, when politics get involved? Forget about it!
An angry student journalist, who happens to...
Flight attendant rap. →
My mother is a flight attendant for United Airlines. Her “seniority” is currently topping off at 20 years. My mom’s sense of humor is dry and she is rarely offended but oftens offends. That is why I was surprised to her response to this video.
Johanna (Mom) says: ”I’m not amused. While those morons are practicing their musical “skills” over at...
Everyblock: what you don't know...
Apparently I am a much firmer believe in “what you don’t know won’t hurt you” than I had previously thought.
My first reaction when I typed in “60605” and the Crimes section came pouring in was, “What?! I don’t want to know this!”
Although I have learned that there is a condo for sale right around the corner for over $600,000 I am still...

The Internet and Me.
As a young adult, the Internet has provided me with a plethora of ways to stay connected to a plethora of people. Whether they are co-workers, family, friends, enemies… I can reach them with a click of a button (and maybe a clicking of a few keys as well.)
As a journalist, the Internet has provided me with a plethora of information and infinite ways of gathering that information. Even...
Multimedia saved my life
It’s true; multimedia saved my life. Afterall, I have heard that boredom kills.
The concept of having media directed to us in many different forms sincerely thrills me. If I had to sit down and get all of my news through reading the tiny newsprint that leaves my hands dirty day in and day out…I’d probably opt to be left out of “the loop.”
In all seriousness, I get...
Engaged and...Enraged?
To many people, the end of “singledom” officially hits when you get married. So, when the engagement is underway…it’s all downhill from there (or perhaps uphill, depending on whether or not you were at the top of the hill or the bottom to begin with.)
My best friend of eight years was proposed to by a lovely man she has been dating for almost two years. After getting a phone call from her while...
Single Moms: You Go Girl
Being single mom is no easy feat. It doesn’t matter how old your kids get, once you are their mom, you will always be your mom. Changing diapers, driving them to ballet class, wearing the traditionally ugly “mother of the bride” dress… it’s all part of the job.
So what happens when you get lonely? Kids can only fill so many “love voids,” as I like to call them. What would any normal woman do?...
Whatchu talkin' bout, Willis?! →
This is truly a shame. Pure idiocracy. The size of some peoples’ heads is remarkable. I felt the exact same way when they (they being Macy’s) took away a slice of my childhood I hoped to share with my children someday.
I was a fashion major in my second year when I heard the news that Marshall Field’s was being bought and subsequently renamed and rerouted as a Macy’s tag....
This is homework??
I received an assignment for my fashion journalism class to “write a short piece on an article of your clothing or body part and explain why you like or dislike it.”
“Seriously?” I thought to myself. ”Fine.” I continue now to brainstorm ideas of what I could possibly write about without psychologically mind-screwing myself too much (which I have a tendency to...

Genius rebuttal: Chicago is NOT miserable
Forbes has kindly tagged Chicago as being third on the list of most miserable cities in the United States. Neil Steinberg has kindly disputed that claim.
In his own witty way, Steinberg makes enough of a valid point to warrant a rather large mentioning on the front page of yesterday’s Sun-Times. According to Steinberg:
“What the Forbes study overlooks is that Chicago is not populated by...
Lesson #1: money management
When I was five years old my dad took my sister and me to the bank. I gave the teller $15 and a smile and the teller gave me my first savings account. Little did I know this was the beginning of a 15-year love/hate relationship with my dad and money.
My childhood was spent saving money. Of course at age five I had little to no idea what I was saving it for. But, I knew it was...
journalism and its changing face.
As I near the end of a four year stint at Columbia College, I find myself, like everyone else, wondering what the next move is. What on earth will I do with a specialty in magazine journalism? My mom says, “Whatever the hell you want! People will read it no matter what.” While I love her optimism, I can’t help but wonder how realistic she’s being.
Bankruptcy,...
