journalism and its changing face.
As I near the end of a four year stint at Columbia College, I find myself, like everyone else, wondering what the next move is. What on earth will I do with a specialty in magazine journalism? My mom says, “Whatever the hell you want! People will read it no matter what.” While I love her optimism, I can’t help but wonder how realistic she’s being.
Bankruptcy, unemployment, pay cuts… the stats of the industry don’t sound extremely promising. But, I remain optimistic for one reason: technology. It has come so far and will continue to go even farther. New types of journalism are popping up left and right as we discover not only new ways of writing, but new ways of reaching new audiences. Everything is new, which admittedly can have it’s up sides and down sides, but what doesn’t?
Optimism is something I am holding onto as I plan to step off that stage at the UIC pavilion in May and into the real world. I will walk into interviews with confidence in my ability to offer something some others cannot. I am a “digital native” after all. As part of a new and strange generation who grew up with such technology, I now have the upper hand.
